14 karat gold. 24 karat gold. Yellow gold. White gold. Rose gold. When shopping for a new piece of gold jewelry sometimes the choices can be overwhelming. So, what is the difference anyways? Here are some quick facts to help you better understand the different types of gold that you’ll see in our store.

Karats: A karat refers to the amount of gold in a particular piece of jewelry. 24 karat pure gold has unique properties that make it highly valuable, though it is generally considered too soft for wedding rings and other jewelry pieces. In order to strengthen it gold is often combined with other metals, such as copper, silver and zinc. A higher karat means that there is a higher percentage of pure gold versus other metals. This is why 18K is more valuable than 14K gold.

Colored Gold: Pure gold is always yellow, though when it is combined with other metals to increase its strength, the color is altered as well. White gold results when gold is combined with a white metal, such as nickel, manganese or palladium. Rose gold, on the other hand, is created when gold is combined with copper.
